Golden Rule of Fun
Sometimes necessity is not enough motivation to open up that language learning centre . That’s when we need to remember to add FUN. Some singing, dancing, play or movement often does the trick . I call this The Golden Rule of Fun.
When children are having fun they are much more likely to play for longer, listening more intently and learn from the words we say.
Cubbies really help us hone in on the 𝘎𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘯 𝘙𝘶𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘍𝘜𝘕. A good old fashioned cubby house with chairs and sheets. When I played cubbies with my little one she loved “breaking” the cubby roof over and over again. She loved pulling the sheet down or off and pointing to it so I would fix it. She was so keen to listen and watch me as I said the words that matched what was happening, “oh no, it’s broken” and “let’s fix it”, she was quickly trying to join in and babble her way through these phrases.
There are so many ways to have fun and often it’s about watching what our kids do, copy them and then make it more dramatic. Next time you are playing or hoping to teach your child a new word, try to add more fun and see what happens. But don’t forget to give lots of PAUSE time so they feel motivated to fill the gap and make some noise!
